Online alliances are part of the design, so a connection is needed to coordinate with players around the world. Play splits into screw puzzles, where the unscrewing order decides the result, and base building with walls, resource bases and technology. You also assign roles to survivors and send expedition teams into ruins. Progress is gradual. The screw puzzles are the quickest way in, so start there before the management systems.
